"The hand of the Master"?
For the second time in succession the authorities of the City of Ghent 
made an appeal to the public to send in pictures from which the official 
Ghent Festivities poster would be chosen. The Department of Festivities 
received 55 photos (in 2002: 73), from which 3 were selected by a jury 
consisting of civil servants of the City of Ghent. In the end the 
City Council awarded a prize of EUR 1,000 to the Ghent photographer 
Alex Vanhee for his photograph of the hand of singer Omara Portuondo 
from the Buena Vista Social Club.
The photograph
When sending in his photograph for the competition, Alex Vanhee 
described the picture as follows: "This picture was made during a 
concert by Buena Vista Social Club (August 2002). In spite of the fact 
that they have reached the ripe age of 50, 60 and 70, they still give it 
their all during their concerts. The picture shows the hand of Omara 
Portuondo, the 60-year-old singer of the group. Age is not important 
for this kind of Cuban music. And also during the Ghent Festivities, 
there is a party atmosphere which appeals to young and old."
